California to Albuquerque

Julian Sutter

Hoped on a train to Albuquerque from Riverside on Tuesday night.  The train was an overnight 13 leaving at 8pm and arriving at 11am the next morning.  I always love the train.  You can walk around and talk to people (and believe me, they LOVE to talk.) Ill go ahead and get into detail in a bit.

The observation car is great.  As you see here, you can it and look out while you relax.  The only downside to this car was that it only had two power plugs and they were across the Isle from were you sit!. I ended up hanging out the whole morning in the car down below shooting the shit with random strangers.

Crazy people on the train.

Here are some of the crazy profiles of people I met on the train.

A skinny episcopal christian jewelry crafter headed to Chicago for a jewelry conference.
This guy was pretty cool. We actually had a fairly deep conversation about faith and the importance in believing in something.  As he put it “God doesn’t fit in any of my boxes.”

Pudgy British Woman
She explained that living without faith in a god is just something some people have to accept…. and that it would be nice to believe.

Mr. T from Alabama State.

Retired Teamster who has a solid pension even during these times, thanks to the union.

Two kids… one under age, older one snuck him a beer… they discussed how if your getting a low paying job.. make it one that you are working with your hands… that way the time goes by faster….

The guy working the snack shop… fat… bad sense of humor… copper chain bracelet.   Calls each woman “m’lady” and thanks everyone for gratuity when they don’t take there change.

Mexican in a wolverine sweater who keeps stalking my power plug =P. “You will give up that spot sooner of later!

VERY large woman who complimented my eyes in a creepy manner.  She is headed to Albuquerque were her family is located. Very Sociable.

Mexican gentleman, with a gold tooth, white cowboy hat (see photo above).

“Ace” guy moving from phoenix to colorado.  Cincinnati hat, red sun glasses, various kinds jewelry. Kept talking about his homies.   Suzie tattoo on his arm.  Also has very visible shakes.  “angie caroline, evet… he has girls all over the place”. *cough*

Older black woman with a blonde “Heidi” wig.

Tall Paul… Tall blond guy with long hair… who wants music with more sustenance than normal music now days…
outdoors type.  He tells stories.. likes to talk.
“I went camping with some friends… they didn’t know how to start a fire!”
He does sales for an automation company… first bid was on dubi airport… and failed.
Flies planes…
Drinks tea with creamer.
Talks a LOT
You cant interrupt him….

Home Sweet Home

By the time the train got into station at 11am, I was ready to be home.  It definately was a good trip, but the lack of power plugs was really getting to me.  Plus I had the Chicken Whisperer waiting for me at the house!

Anyone else take the train a lot?  I find the trips to be great each time.  Give it a try some time. Cheaper than driving of flying.

The train is cheaper than driving? If you ONLY account for gas/food when driving, the train isn’t much cheaper at all…

…but I LOVE it none-the-less… I hope to take a long train-trip to the Northwest in the near future.

    Great pictures, thanks for sharing.

My entire trip cost me $150 round trip… Driving costs roughly 90 bucks EACH WAY. PLUS on the train its easier to eat a sandwich.

PLUS its not any extra emitions for your travel (as that seat is empty if you don’t go….

PLUS since its over night… you gain an extra work day both ways….

So its a heck of a lot cheaper =P
